Das vorliegende Gemälde ist ein Ausschnitt eines vergleichbaren Werkes von Peter Paul Rubens, dessen Original sich in London befindet. Es zeigt Minerva, die Göttin des Verteidigungskrieges, der Weisheit und des Handwerks, in Rüstung und Helm, bei der Vertreibung des Kriegsgottes Mars, der hier in Rüstung mit rotem Umhang wiedergegeben ist. Minerva schafft so die Voraussetzung für den aus dem Frieden erwachsenden Überfluss, der durch die ein Kind nährende nackte Frau, sowie durch die Gartenfrüchte, um die eine Schar von Kindern steht, symbolisiert wird. Auch der am Boden liegende Leopard gehört zu dem friedlichen Miteinander. Malerei in der typischen Manier des berühmten Künstlers.
Anmerkung:
„Minerva, die den Frieden vor Mars schützt“, oder „Frieden und Krieg“, ist ein Gemälde von Peter Paul Rubens. Er schuf es zwischen 1629 und 1630 in London während einer diplomatischen Mission der spanischen Niederlande bei Karl I von England. Es befindet sich heute in der National Gallery in London. The present painting is a detail section from a comparable work by Peter Paul Rubens, which is held in London. It shows Minerva, the goddess of defensive war, wisdom and trade, in armour and helmet, during the expulsion of Mars, the god of war, who is shown here in armour with a red cloak.
Notes:
“Minerva protecting Peace from Mars”, or “Peace and War”, is a painting by Peter Paul Rubens. He created it in London between 1629 and 1630, during a diplomatic mission from the Spanish Netherlands to Charles I of England. It is now in the National Gallery in London.
