Scanavino gehört zu den wichtigsten Vertretern der Abstrakten Kunst in Italien nach dem 2. Weltkrieg. Er lernte an der Kunstschule Liceo Artistico Nicolò Barabino in Genua und besuchte danach Paris. Er war bekannt und befreundet mit zahlreichen Künstlern wie WOLS (1913-1951), Francis Bacon (1909-1992), der Gruppe CoBrA, Lucio Fontana (1899-1968), Wifredo Lam (1902-1982), Roberto Matta (1911-2002), Enrico Baj (1924-2003) oder Guillaume Corneille (1922-2010), die teils sein Werk beeinflussten. Mehrfach stellte er auf der Biennale in Venedig aus.
