In tadelloser Erhaltung. A. R. (12618134) (11)

German sculptor, ca. 1600
ORIGINAL FRAMED CARVED RELIEF DEPICTING THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST
Overall outside dimensions: 30.2 x 26.2 cm.

Christ is shown sitting on the cover plate of the sarcophagus, his right hand raised, while his left is holding the globe and the crucifix resting in the crook of his arm. His right foot is standing on the skull of Adam with a snake curled around it. According to Christian catechesis the iconography of this depiction symbolises the deliverance from sin through the death of Christ.

The matching, blackened frame was probably created by the artist himself. It shows carved ornaments in the shape of grotesque masques, symmetrical volutes and rosettes with leaf gilding on the narrow inner surfaces. This high-quality carving suggests a Franconian artist. In pristine condition.

This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
