Auf einem Marktplatz einer kleinen Stadt, umgeben von alten Häusern, hat sich um den Präfekten, der in der Bildmitte steht in elegantem schwarzen Anzug mit weißem Hemd, eine große Anzahl der Stadtbewohner versammelt. Sie werden von dem hohen Verwaltungsbeamten mit hochgehobenem Zylinder, gehalten in seiner rechten Hand mit blauem Handschuh, herzlich begrüßt, während die andere Hand die eines Mannes schüttelt. Mehrere der umstehenden Männer haben sich für den Besuch extra herausgeputzt und tragen ebenfalls Zylinder, zwei davon haben diesen ebenfalls zur Begrüßung angehoben. Die anwesenden Frauen tragen weiße Hauben, von denen im Hintergrund viele zu sehen sind. Im Vordergrund außerdem zahlreiche Tiere, zu denen Schweine, Hühner, Schafe, eine Ente und ein neugieriger Hund gehören, der den Besucher beschnuppern möchte. Am linken Rand ragen zudem die Köpfe zweier brauner Kühe ins Bild, darunter stehend zwei Holzfässer, auf und vor denen stilllebenhaft einige Keramikgefäße wie Schüsseln und Krüge präsentiert werden, wohl als Hinweis darauf, dass der Künstler sich auch auf diesem Gebiet der Darstellung auskennt. Feine Malerei mit vielen Details in zurückhaltender Farbgebung. (†)
Anmerkung:
Der Künstler war Maler, Illustrator, Karikaturist, Graveur und Lithograf. Ab 1863 arbeitete er für das Magazin „Le Journal Amusant“. Ab 1969 stellte er im Salon mehrere Ölgemälde auf Leinwand aus. (1261889) (18)

Notes:
The artist was active as a painter, illustrator, caricaturist, engraver and lithographer. Since 1863 he worked for the magazine “Le Journal” Amusant and he exhibited several oil paintings on canvas at the Salon from 1869 onwards.
