Hans Multscher
1400 - 1467, circle of
THE VIRGIN AND CHILDHeight: 177 cm.
Ulm, ca. 1465.
Almost three-dimensional carving in limewood and hollowed at the back.
Notes:
The composition of the folds and the alignment of the Christ Child are reminiscent of the Bihlafinger Madonna held in the catholic parish church of Saint Theodore in Bihlafingen, even though this sculpture is a little smaller with a height of only 105 cm. A further example of comparison is The Virgin and Child sculpture of the Sterzing Altar at the parish church of Maria im Moos (Our Lady in the Moss) by Hans Multscher, which is, however, polychrome. The Madonna of Sterzing is dated to 1458. A further comparable sculpture is The Virgin of Ochsenhausen held at the Liebieghaus in Frankfurt, which is also attributed to the workshop of Hans Multscher, ca. 1455/60.
Literature:
Compare Dr A. Schahl, Eine Mutter Gottes aus der Multscher Werkstatt, in: Heimatkundliche Blätter für den Kreis Biberach 3, 1980, p. 10, inv. no. 222, purchased 1912, with a height of 138 cm. A sculpture held at the Liebieghaus shows remains of an older or even original polychromy.
