1843 Albano Laziale – 1931 Venice
BOY ENJOYING AN APPLEOil on canvas.
68 x 48 cm.
Signature and date “1886” towards the top right edge.
In heavy gilt frame.
The painting depicts the boy standing to the left in three-quarter length against a green shimmering background dressed in an open, slightly soiled shirt of to street urchin. He is holding out shiny pieces of fruit in his hat and is evidently savouring an apple with great intent. This is a popular genre scene of the artist as are his barn scenes, depictions of young women or other Southern folk scenes. His works often include Italian girls, begging children or courtyard scenes. In some way, the artist is paying tribute to the poor but light-hearted life in Italy in the painting on offer for sale here.
The artist was born in Italy and is the son of the famous Austrian painter Carl von Blaas (1815-1894), who was his first teacher. Just like his father he was later also a professor at the Academy in Venice.
