Hieronymus wurde 347 in Illyrien im heutigen Kroatien geboren und ließ sich schließlich 385 in Betlehem nieder, wo er ein Kloster für Männer und eines für Frauen gründete, bevor er ca. 420 starb. Der Heilige ist vor allem für seine Übersetzung der Bibel aus dem Griechischen ins Lateinische bekannt, was auch seine ikonographische Darstellung seit dem 15. Jahrhundert erklärt: Wenn nicht in der Wüste, so wird er gern in einer Studierstube oder – wie auch hier – in einer Höhle dargestellt. Das bis dato unpublizierte Gemälde ist, wie Spinosa betont, in sehr gutem Zustand und zeigt Anklänge des Jusepe de Ribera der späten 1620er Jahre, mit dessen Atelier der gebürtige Flame Hendrick van Somer in Kontakt stand. Spinosa schlägt für das vorliegende Gemälde eine Datierung von ca. 1634 vor. Vergleichbar ist ein Prophet Elias im Art Museum in Princeton und ein San Girolamo (signiert) in der Galleria Borghese in Rom.
