Thema des querformatigen, von Chiaroscuro-Gegensätzen lebenden, Gemäldes ist das Quellwunder des Moses aus dem Alten Testament (4. Mose XX 1). Auf ihrem Zug aus der ägyptischen Knechtschaft in das Gelobte Land kommen die Israeliten in die Wüste Zin nach Kades. Dem Verdursten nahe, beklagen sie sich bei Moses und Aaron und zweifeln an deren göttlicher Sendung. Den beiden Männern wird jedoch von Gott ein Wunder verheißen. Sie sammeln das Volk und die mitgeführten Tiere an einem Felsen. Nachdem sie zu diesem gesprochen haben, schlägt Moses zweimal den Stab gegen das Gestein, aus dem daraufhin das lebensspendende Wasser bricht. Neben der nach rechts strebenden Rückenfigur ist die zentrale Figur des Moses, hinter welchem Aaron sichtbar ist, am stärksten beleuchtet. Das Wasser erscheint gegen den Stein als leuchtende Reflexe, auf welche sich die Blicke der meisten Personen richten. (1222361)
