Hans Hofmann,
1880 Weißenburg/ Bayern – 1966 New York

Der Künstler war ein deutsch-US-amerikanischer Maler, Lehrer und Kunstprofessor, der in seinen frühen Werken eine Synthese aus Fauvismus und Kubismus anstrebte. 1932 ließ er sich in New York nieder, da seine Kunst als entartet bezeichnet wurde. Er gründete hier eine Kunstschule, die großen Einfluss auf die Entwicklung des abstrakten Expressionismus hatte.
