Alessandro Magnasco,
um 1667 Genua – 1749, zug.

Dreifigurige Szene, aus dem Inneren der Grotte betrachtet, mit dem Höhlenausgang im Hintergrund mit blauer Wolkenbildung. Im Vordergrund ein Franziskanereremit an einem Steinblock in gebeugter Haltung, kniend im Gebet, daneben ein Holzkreuz, am Boden Schädel und darüberliegende Buchseiten. Im Hintergrund zwei weitere Eremiten, die jeweils einen Schädel halten, in nachdenklichen Posen. Die Farbigkeit und der Malduktus stimmen mit der Malweise Magnascos überein.

Provenienz:
Sammlung Mario Rossi, Varese.
Ehemals Privatsammlung Venedig.
1943 als veräußert aufgeführt in der Liste von Wart Arslan.
Damals von Giuseppe Fiocco Sebastiano Ricci (1659-1734) zug., da sich von der Hand dieses Malers eine Zeichnung in der Accademia Venedig befindet, die in Abhängigkeit zum Gemälde steht.

1943 listed in the register of Wart Arslan as sold.
At the time attributed to Giuseppe Fiocco Sebastiano Ricci (1659-1734), as there is a drawing by this artist held at the Accademia Gallery of Venice, which is has a connection with the painting.
