Die wohl auf van Balen zurückgehende Bildauffassung des Themas zeigt die griechische Legende, nach der der Jäger Aktaion verbotenerweise die Jagdgöttin Diana mit ihren Gespielinnen nackt beim Bade beobachet, weswegen er in einen Hirsch verwandelt wird. Die von Ovid überlieferte Legende auf vorliegendem Werk lebendig vorgeführt: Im Zentrum, leicht nach links versetzt, die Jagdgöttin, nur mit einem Tusch bekleidet, im Haar ein Monddiadem. Nach rechts hin ihre Gespielinnen, die zu entfliehen versuchen, eine der Begleiterinnen im Hintergrund mit typisch italienischem Kopftuch, diese scheint den Fluch auszusprechen. Der Jäger Aktaion hier links oben auf dem Felsen in bereits teilverwandelter Form mit Hirschkopf wiedergegeben. (1190292) (10)

The composition probably traces back to van Balen and shows the Greek myth according to Ovid of the hunter Actaion illicitly spying on the naked hunting goddess Diana with her female companions bathing for which he was turned into a stag.
