CAVALRY SKIRMISH
Oil on canvas. Relined.
104.7 x 159.4 cm
Framed in more recent ebonised and gilt moulding.
A crowded battle leading to considerable bloodshed is gushing down from a ridge of hills. The silhouette of a church tower can be made out in the landscape, which may be an allusion to the Thirty Years’ War. As is typical for Meulener, a knotted dark but nuanced tree on the left acts as a repoussoir. Figures such as the commander on a rearing grey horse are typical for Meulener. Restored.
Provenance:
Christie’s, London, 5 July 2013, lot 184 as Pieter Meulener.
