Links unten signiert und datiert „1859“. Verso gestochenes Malmittelherstelleretikett mit Aufschrift „Fs Smaelen/ Brüssel“. Ferner handgeschriebener Klebezettel mit Titelbezeichnung.

Die Ansicht vom Flachufer hinweg auf die rechts sich auftürmenden Gemäuer in bereits dunkelnder Abendstimmung. So erscheint die Architektur beinahe silhouettenhaft vor den noch hell erleuchteten Wolken des Abendhimmels. Im Vordergrund zahlreiche Personen am Ufer sowie in den an Land gezogenen Fischerbooten. So vermittelt auch die Figurenstaffage eine der Naturstimmung entsprechende Abendruhe.
Ebenso wie sein Bruder Oswald Achenbach (1827 – 1905) einer der bedeutendsten Landschaftsmaler seiner Zeit. Führender Maler der Düsseldorfer Malerschule. Schüler von Wilhelm Friedrich von Schadow (1788 – 1862), später in Frankfurt und München tätig. Freund von Alfred Rethel (1816 – 1859) am Städelschen Kunstinstitut. (1190802) (11)
