Die Nomoli-Figuren gehören zu den frühesten bekannten Kunstwerken Sierra Leones und sind die einzigen Relikte eines Königreiches, welches im 15. und 16. Jahrhundert im heutigen Sierra Leone und in Liberia existierten. Da sie meist auf dem Land der Mende gefunden werden, werden sie traditionell mit diesem Volk assoziiert. Bereits im 15. Jahrhundert wurden solche Figuren von portugiesischen Forschungsreisenden gefunden (Vgl. Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Objekt 85 – 1-3). (1180861) (13)
