BATTLE PIECE

Oil on canvas.
95 x 136 cm.
Signed "G.B. WEENIX" on the lower left picture margin.

In Rome, the artist specialised in creating landscape paintings "all'italiana". Above all he stood out because of his virtuous manner of colouration, his ability to achieve visual effects by "bathing" the scenes in a warm, shining light. Weenix painted remarkable hunting still lives, harbour scenes and battle pieces as demonstrated in the present work, which was probably executed in the 1660s.
