Artemisia Gentileschi,

Die Künstlerin gilt als bedeutendste Vertreterin des Barocks und wurde als Tochter des Malers Orazio Gentileschi in Rom geboren. 1616 trat sie als erste Frau der Accademia dell'Arte del Disegno in Florenz bei und leitete später ihre eigene Werkstatt, was zu dieser Zeit eine absolute Ausnahme darstellt. Ihr Oeuvre umfasst – auch dies ungewöhnlich für das Werk einer Malerin ihrer Zeit – insbesondere mythologische und biblische Themen, dabei entstand ihr bekanntestes Werk "Judith enthauptet Holofernes" um 1620, dieses befindet sich heute in den Uffizien, Florenz. Artemisia Gentileschi gilt als "Caravaggistin", doch hat sie diese Stilrichtung um eine eigenständige weibliche Komponente bereichert.

Ungerahmt.
Ganzfiguriges Bildnis des entspannt sitzenden David, welcher auf dem übergroßen Haupt des Goliath sitzt. Mit kontrastreichem Hintergrund, der durch einen Fels zur Rechten verdunkelt wird und links den Blick in eine sonnenbeschienene Landschaft offenbart. Der in caravaggistischem Hell-Dunkel gestaltete, sitzende David mit übereinander geschlagenen Beinen, seinen rechten Arm locker auf ein Schwert gestützt, seine Schleuder zu seinen Füßen liegend. Ein sehr ähnliches Gemälde, wobei der Kopf in diesem Fall als Stütze für die rechte Hand des David dient, wurde bereits 1631 von Joachim I von Sandrart (1606-1688) beschrieben und befindet sich heute in einer Privatsammlung.

Unframed.
Full-figure portrait of David, sitting relaxed on the oversized head of Goliath. A very similar painting, in which the head of Goliath serves as a prop for David's right hand, was already described in 1631 by Joachim I von Sandrart (1606 - 1688) and is today held in a private collection.
