Der Künstler gehört zu all jenen Malern, die gegen Mitte der 20er-Jahre des 16. Jahrhunderts von den Abruzzen nach Venedig übergesiedelt waren. Polidoro fertigte hauptsächlich religiöse Darstellungen, meist für private Auftraggeber. Werke seiner Hand in mehreren öffentlichen Sammlungen, wie im Museo di Capodimonte in Neapel, in der Galleria dell'Accademia in Venedig, im Louvre, Paris sowie in der Dresdner Gemäldegalerie. Der Malstil lässt deutlich die venezianische Schule erkennen, wenngleich weit weniger die großen Meister kopierend, als dies bei seinen Zeitgenossen der Fall war.DIE VERLOBUNG DER HEILIGEN KATHARINA Öl auf Holz. Das theologisch-symbolische Thema ist hier in eine Mariendarstellung eingebettet, bei der Maria mit dem Kind auf dem Schoß die Hauptfiguren bilden, während die jugendlich dargestellte Heilige Katharina links herantritt und vom Jesuskind den Ring überreicht bekommt. Das Thema dieser "mystischen" Vermählung fand in der Zeit große Beliebtheit. Die Farbigkeit zeigt sich überwiegend in Brauntönen im Wechsel zum helleren Inkarnat der Figuren und im Kontrast zum Dunkelgrün der Baumkrone oberhalb der Gestalten. Deutlich und markant sind die dunklen Konturen der Figuren, was darauf schließen lässt, dass es sich möglicherweise hier um ein noch nicht völlig vollendetes Gemälde handelt, was deshalb kunsthistorisch nicht weniger von Bedeutung ist.
