In einem nicht näher bestimmbaren Innenraum sitzt die in reich gefälteltem Gewand gehüllte Figur des jugendlichen Johannes, welcher über den von ihm geschriebenen Text zu sinnieren scheint, der in Form eines Buches auf seinem Schoss liegt. Seine Linke hält eine Schreibfeder. Das Raumvakuum, welches durch das L-förmige Profil der dargestellten sitzenden Kniefigur entsteht, wird durch das Attributtier des Johannes, den Adler, gefüllt.

Expertise:
Dem Objekt ist eine Expertise in Kopie beigegeben von Sandro Bellesi (Accademia di Belle Arti, Florenz). Dandini arbeitete schon in jungen Jahren im Atelier des Francesco Curradi (1570-1661) und später in der Werkstatt des Cristofano Allori (1577-1621) und des Domenico Cresti il Passignano (1558-1638), wo sich schließlich sein eigener Stil herausbildete. Das vorliegende Werk lasse sich gut in das Werk Dandinis eingliedern, so Bellesi, und sei um die Mitte der 1630er-Jahre entstanden.

Expert's report:
A copy of the expert's report by Sandro Bellesi (Accademia di Belle Arti, Florence) is enclosed. Dandini worked in the studio of Francesco Curradi (1570-1661) as a young man and later in the workshop of Cristofano Allori (1577-1621) and Domenico Cresti il Passignano (1558-1638), where he finally developed his very own style. According to Bellesi, the present painting easily fits into Dandini's oeuvre and was created in the 1630s.

"Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal. In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings." (Book of Revelation, 4:6-8)
