Eigentlich Wifredo Ascar de la Concepción Lam y Castilla. Der surrealistische Maler erhielt seine erste Ausbildung an der Kunsthochschule in Havanna. 1923 wanderte er nach Spanien aus und besuchte die Kunsthochschule von Madrid. In Paris lernte er Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) und André Breton (1896-1966) kennen. Lams kraftvolle Malerei war stets inspiriert durch karibisch-afrikanische Kulte um Geister und Tänze.
