Die fossile Riesenmuschel Tridacna gigas stammt aus Ablagerungen des Pleistozäns der näheren Umgebung von Mombasa/Kenia. Der dort vorkommende Kalk-Sandstein wurde früher von den Einheimischen mit primitivsten Mitteln zur Gewinnung von Baumaterial abgebaut. Dabei stießen die Arbeiter gelegentlich auch auf eine solche Riesenmuschel, welche im Extremfall bis 1m groß werden kann.
Die Schale ist vollständig in Aragonit umgewandelt und läßt sich deshalb – im Gegensatz zur rezenten Tridacna gigantea – vortrefflich polieren. Gute Stücke waren aber stets selten, da sie meistens beim Abbau so stark beschädigt wurden, daß sie unbrauchbar wurden. Durch den heutigen maschinellen Abbau wird leider sämtliches im Gestein enthaltenes Fossilmaterial zerstört. (1131063) (13)
