(10807421) (12)

Lesser Ury,
1861 Birnbaum - 1931 Berlin

DUTCH LANDSCAPE WITH CANALS AND WINDMILLS, 1913

Oil on canvas.
61.5 x 74.5 cm.
Signed and dated lower left.

Accompanied by a photographic certificate and an expert's report by Dr Sibylle Groß, Berlin, dated 16th and 17th August 2017.

The painting will be included in the upcoming catalogue raisonné. Lesser Ury, who came from a Jewish family and was destined for a career in trade, abandoned his apprenticeship in 1879 to study art in Düsseldorf, Brussels, Paris and finally in Munich instead. He relocated to Berlin in 1887, where he remained until his death. He was granted a scholarship to travel several months through Italy. In 1912/13 he stayed in the Netherlands where he mostly created paintings depicting the rural surroundings including village-, river- and canal scenes. After this stay, his Dutch landscapes were shown at a great exhibition at Galerie Schulte where they were very well received. The painting on offer for sale in this lot is part of this series of motifs.
It shows a canal, leading diagonally into the left background with two windmills. Several grazing and reclining cows can be seen along the canal's embankments. Seagulls are circling the overcast sky. The painting is an exceptionally beautiful example for the masterful depiction of light and air by this artist.

Provenance:
Private collection, Frankfurt, until 1988.

This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
