Mitarbeiter von Taddeo Zuccari (1529-1566) und Jacobo Barozzi da Vignola (1507-1573). Eigene Werkstatt ab 1565, galt in der Folge als bedeutenster Portraitist Bolognas, wobei in seinen Portraits nicht selten Tierdarstellungen eingebunden sind.

Dreiviertelbildnis in Lebensgröße, vor dunklem Hintergrund. Das dunkle Wams mit Umhang hebt sich nur leicht vom Hintergrund ab, umso betonender die cremeweiß seidenen Ärmel sowie die Halskrause. Dem Schwarz-Weiß-Effekt der Kleidung gegenüber korrespondieren die braun-beigen Töne des Inkarnats des Hundekopfs, auf den der Jüngling die Hand gelegt hat. Der Blick gilt dem Betrachter, durchdringlich und aufmerksam. Backen und Kinn mit kurz geschorenem Barthaar. Insgesamt eindrucksvolle Portraitmalerei. Einige Farbabsplitterungen in den dunklen Partien.
