Der französische Poltiker und Militär Charles Claude Flahaut de La Billarderie, Cone d'Angivillier, (1730 – 1809) war ein enger Vertrauter Ludwigs XVI und wurde Generaldirektor des „Bâtiments, Arts, Jardins et Manufactures“ von Frankreich. Er förderte den klassizistischen Stil und den Stil à l’antique in Frankreich. 1776 gab er eine Serie von Portraits bedeutender französischer Persönlichkeiten bei Bildhauern der Academie Royale in Auftrag, die in der Großen Galerie des Louvre aufgestellt werden sollten. Da Flahaut de La Billarderie zugleich der Maufaktur in Sèvres vorstand, beauftragte er die Bildhauer etwas später die Werke in einer stark verkleinerten Version in Terracotta nachzubilden, um sie schließlich in Biskuitporzellan herzustellen. Die ersten dieser Serie erwarb der König persönlich, um sie in der Bibliothek in Versailles aufzustellen. Weitere Kopien dienten häufig als diplomatische Geschenke. Von den insgesamt 27 Marmorskulpturen wurden 23 in der verkleinerten Form in Biskuit hergestellt.
Zur Zeit Napoleons wurden aus der Serie nochmals 16 Skulpturen ausgewählt und erschienen im 19. Jahrhundert in neuer Auflage. Besch. (1110401) (10)

The French politician and military officer Charles Claude Flahaut de La Billarderie, Cone d'Angiviller, (1730 – 1809) was a confidant of King Louis XVI and in 1776 he commissioned a series of portraits of important French personalities with sculptors of the Royal Academy. Of the 27 marble sculptures, 23 were reproduced in Bisque porcelain in a smaller format. At the time of Napoleon Bonaparte 16 of these sculptures were selected and remade during the 19th century. Damaged.
