Das großformatige Bild zeigt die Hauptfiguren in Lebensgröße als Folie des eigentlichen Geschehens, wonach die beiden Knäblein, Jesus und Johannes der Täufer, in gegenseitiger Aktion wiedergegeben sind: Der Johannesknabe überreicht dem Jesusknäblein eine weiße Taube. Rechts das Attributtier des Johannes, ein Schaf, begleitet von einem geflügelten Engel, der eine helle Traube in Händen hält, Symbol des Messweins. Die Tatsache, dass hier im Gegensatz zur sonst üblichen Bedeutung, nicht Jesus, sondern der Johannesknabe im Zentrum der Bildkomposition auftaucht, deutet darauf hin, dass es sich wohl um ein Gemälde für einen Johannesaltar gehandelt haben dürfte.
