Jan van Kessel the Elder,
ca. 1626 - 1679
INSECTS
Gouache on parchment.
11.6 x 23 cm.
Signed lower right.
Framed with glass.

In his monograph about the van Kessel painter family the, art expert Klaus Ertz points out that the “insects and reptiles, spread like patterns or arranged in three-dimensional miniature spaces (.) form a relatively homogenous group of works between 1653 and 1661”. The present high-quality painting is a superb example of this: the artist has evenly spread diverse butterflies, such as peacock butterfly magpie moth, and other small insects such as ants and a caterpillar on the right over the entire painting surface. The luminous colours of the wings stand out elegantly against the monochrome background and show the meticulousness and perfection of this master of still life paintings.
