Pirkner studierte in Graz, Salzburg, Klagenfurt und Utrecht. Bis 1976 blieb er in den Niederlanden und kehrte danach nach Osttirol zurück. In seinen Werken setzt sich der Bildhauer v. a. mit der menschlichen Figur auseinander. Den Akt betrachtet er dabei als Verschmelzung zweier Figuren, was besonders ausdrucksvoll im vorliegenden Werk in Erscheinung tritt.
