Childe Hassam,

Nach Abbruch der Highschool und der Anstellung in der Buchhaltung eines Verlages arbeitete Hassam als freier Illustrator für unterschiedliche Magazine wie Harper's und Century Magazine. Daneben nahm er Mal- und Zeichenunterricht bei William Rimmer (1816 - 1879). Während einer Europareise 1883, die den jungen Künstler u.a. nach Frankreich, Italien und England führte, begegnete er dem Werk Joseph Mallord William Turners (1775 - 1851), das ihn nachhaltig beeindruckte. Ein neuer wichtiger Einfluss war die Ausstellung französischer Impressionisten in New York 1886. Noch im selben Jahr reiste Hassam nach Paris, wo er an der Académie Julien studierte und einige Jahre blieb. Zurück in New York 1897 war er Mitbegründer der Künstlergruppe The Ten und avancierte zum wichtigsten Vertreter des Impressionismus in den USA. Das vorliegende Gemälde zeigt eine stark querformatig angelegte Uferlandschaft, die rechts von Gebäuden begrenzt wird. Im Zentrum segeln ein paar Boote auf dem nur wenig bewegten Wasser. Das atmosphärische Gemälde ist in dem für den Künstler typischen feinen Duktus und in harmonisch aufeinander abgestimmten Farben ausgeführt.

After abandoning high school and his subsequent job at the accounting department of a publishing house, Hassam worked as a freelance illustrator for various magazines including Harper's and The Century. At the same time, he took painting and drawing classes with William Rimmer (1816-1879). On a trip through Europe in 1883 he visited France, Italy and England among other countries and became acquainted with works by William Turner that deeply impressed him. An exhibition of Impressionist art in New York in 1886 was another important influence. In the same year Hassam travelled to Paris to study at the Académie Julien and remained there for several years. He returned to New York in 1897 where he co-founded the artist group The Ten and became one of the most important Impressionist painters of the USA.
The painting offered for sale in this lot depicts a shoreline lined with buildings to the right in elongated landscape format. A few boats are sailing at the centre of the almost motionless water. The fine brushwork and harmonious well-matched palette of this atmospheric painting are typical for Hassam.
