Roberto Sebastian Matta
1911 Santiago de Chile – 2002 Civitavecchia
Matta studied architecture in Chile and moved to Paris in 1933 where he worked in the studio of Le Corbusier (1887 - 1965). From 1938 he turned his attention to painting. He travelled throughout Europe extensively and became acquainted with numerous artists including Salvador Dalí (1904 - 1989), Henry Moore (1898 - 1986) and Alvar Aalto (1898 - 1976). Crucial to his artistic development, however, was his meeting and subsequent friendship with André Breton (1896 - 1966). From 1938 and throughout World War II he lived in New York but returned to Europe in 1948 and settled in Rome in 1958. His works are classed as Surrealism.
