Inmitten einem luftigen Meer von Blumen, sitzt eine schwarz gewandete Verkäuferin, welche die bunten Pflanzen auf ihrem Marktstand feil bietet. In sich gekehrt wartet sie auf Kundschaft. Gilbert setzte seinen künstlerischen Fokus auf das bunte Pariser Leben und dokumentierte in seinen Werken das Alltagsleben auf den Boulevards, in den Cafés und eben auch auf den Blumenmärkten. Seine Gemälde waren Bestandteil zahlreicher bekannter Sammlungen, etwa von Monet, van Gogh, Cézanne und Gauguin.
