Verso auf dem Keilrahmen alter wohl gleichzeitiger handschriftlicher Zettel mit Künstlerbezeichnung und Nennung des Dargestellten, Zettel jedoch teilweise berieben.

Brustbild nach links, das kurze schwarze leicht gewellte Haar korrespondiert mit der dunklen Kleidung, wobei der helle Hemdkragen einen wirkungsvollen Akzent liefert. Das Gesicht nachdenklich mit leichtem um den Mund ziehendes Lächeln. Insgesamt von der für den Künstler typisch hohen Portraitqualität.
Der Portraitierte war der bedeutende englische Chemiker Humphry Davy, 1802 - 1812 Professor für Chemie an der Royal Institution in London. Durch Elektrolyse geschmolzener Alkalien gelang es ihm erstmals, die Elemente Natrium, Kalium, Barium, Strontium, Calcium und Magnesium darzustellen. Er erkannte Chlor als Element und entdeckte, dass Wasserstoff Voraussetzung für Säuren ist, womit er zu den Wegbereitern der modernen Elektrochemie zählt. (10710914) (11)

Old, probably contemporaneous hand-written note on the stretcher with artist's name and the name of the sitter, partly rubbed.

The portrait is of high quality and typical for Sir Thomas Lawrence. The portrayed gentleman is the important English Chemist Sir Humphry Davy,who was Professor for Chemistry at the Royal Institution in London between 1802 and 1812. He was a pioneer in melting alkali by means of electrolysis and succeeded in discovering new elements such as sodium, potassium, barium, strontium, calcium and magnesium. He also discovered that chlorine is an element and that acids contain hydrogen. His discoveries made him a pioneer of modern electrochemistry.
