Provenienz:
Sotheby’s, London, 23. Mai 1979, Lot 111 (hier als Simon Verelst).
J. Lehnert, Tübingen (als Maria van Oosterwijck, vgl. Weltkunst, 15. Februar 1980, S. 374 mit Abb.). (10700021) (12)

FLOWER STILL LIFE

Oil on canvas. Relined.
77 x 62.5 cm.

We would like to thank Dr. Fred G. Meijer (RKD, Den Haag) for friendly piece of advice.

Accompanied by a report by Prof Dr Claus Grimm.

Bergström attributes the painting to Maria van Oosterwijck. An opulent flower still life in a glass vase stands on a profiled stone plinth. The magnificent composition is leavened up by a very diverse selection of flowers including roses, irises, tulips and carnations with large leaves. The leaves are starting to wither at the edges. This popular arrangement is known from two versions with slight variations painted by Stuven himself (see RKD no. 116757 and 232684). As a result of recent scholarship, the offered painting, which was formerly believed to be by Maria van Oosterwijck can now be more firmly attributed to Ernst Stuven.

Provenance:
Sotheby’s London, 23 May 1979, lot 111 (catalogued as the work of Simon Verelst).
J. Lehnert, Tübingen (attributed to Maria van Oosterwijck; see Weltkunst, 15 February 1980, p. 374, illustrated).

This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
