Der Maler war Sohn deutscher Auswanderer, er kam 1870 nach München an die Kunstakademie unter Albrecht Christoph Wilhelm von Diez (1839 - 1907) und Ludwig von Löfftz (1845 - 1910). Er kehrte 1873 in die USA zurück, um dann ab 1878 erneut nach Bayern zurückzukehren und als Hochschullehrer der Münchner Akademie in dem bayerischen Ort Polling zu wirken.
