THE VIRGIN MARY WITH CHERUBIM IN HEAVEN

Oil on panel.
42 x 53 cm.

Pieter van der Werff was the younger brother of Adriaen van der Werff (1659 - 1722) and was probably trained as a painter along with his older brother. The Staatsgalerie Schleißheim holds a painting by Adriaen that shows the coronation of the Virgin in the clouds. The elegantly and harmoniously composed Virgin probably inspired his brother Pieter to repeat the subject. He reduced the composition by omitting the angels and Christ descending from the clouds so that the main focus is on the contemplative Virgin.
