1450 Siena - 1516/ 17, workshop of

PUTTO BETWEEN GRAPE VINES AND ROSE BLOSSOMS

Tempera on panel.
17 x 37 cm.

This extremely fine panel painting is part of a decorative frieze, which formerly decorated the base of a large-format painting. Stylistically the work can be attributed to the Sienese School and was probably created in the last quarter of the 15th century. The manner of painting fits in with a series of other base paintings that Guidoccio Cozzarelli and his workshops produced at the time. Cozzarelli was a student and assistant of Matteo di Giovanni, who greatly influenced him. Both the decoration and the figure of the lively putto are reminiscent of works by Cozzarelli, such as Rotorno di Ulisse (Paris, Musée de Cluny), Battesimo di Cristo (Sinalunga, San Bernardino church) and Madonna col Bambino in trono, angeli e santi held at the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Siena.
