Es handelt sich hier um eine typische Darstellung des Heiligen Hieronymus in der Wüste, der als Büßender vor dem Kreuz kniet. Neben ihm ist nur der Löwe zu sehen, dem er der Legende nach einen Dorn aus der Tatze zog. Die Figur des Heiligen beherrscht den Vordergrund, im Hintergrund sind eine Fantasielandschaft sowie zwei Felswände und - in der Ferne - eine turmreiche Dorffestung zu erkennen. Die Darstellungsweise bezeugt direkte Kenntnisse der venezianischen Modelle (Giovanni Bellini, Alvise Vivarini, Cima da Conegliano) und der Emilianischen Schule (Francesco Francia, Marco Palmezzano). Das Werk erinnert stilistisch an Gemälde von Marco Meloni (tätig um 1504/ 1537) und vor allem an den aus den Marken stammenden Pietro Paolo Agabiti (um 1470 - um 1540). Dies ist gut erkennbar, vergleicht man das vorliegende Werk mit bekannten Gemälden dieses Künstlers wie der Natività in der Kirche Santa Maria del Ponte del Piano in Sassoferrato und dem Hieronymus als Büßer der Pinacoteca Civica in Jesi. The manner of depiction is testament to the first-hand knowledge of Venetian models (Giovanni Bellini, Alvise Vivarini, Cima da Conegliano) and the School of the Emilia-Romagna (Francesco Francia, Marco Palmez zano). Stylistically the painting is reminiscent of works by Marco Meloni and Pietro Paolo Agabiti (ca. 1470 - ca. 1540), an artist originating from the Marches. This becomes apparent when comparing the present work with known paintings by the artist, such as the Natività at the San Maria del Piano (Sassoferrato) and The Penitent Saint Jerome held at the Pinacoteca Civica in Iesi.
