Pier Francesco Cittadini kam viel herum.

HAMPER WITH FIGURES IN THE BACKGROUND (THE SNACK)

Oil on canvas.
75.5 x 108 cm.

Pier Francesco Cittadini travelled a lot. His training was versatile and at a high level, enabling him to paint all genres that the art market demanded at the time with equal mastery. In 1769 Luigi Crespi (Cittadini's biographer) invented the term “merende“ (Ital. for light snack) for a type of still life to which our painting also belongs. In this type of depiction all kinds of food (fruit, sweets, sausages) are depicted in the foreground in a good combination of sweet and salty foods. The background is enlivened by two elegantly dressed figures that give the painting a new, narrative touch by hinting at a pleasurable trip and giving the whole scene a slightly Arcadian tone and a galant scene ahead of its time. There are clear references to masterpieces by Pier Francesco Cittadini, as, for example, the four paintings held at the Galleria Estense in Modena or the Natura morta con frutta candita e frutta di stagione at Museo Civico in Trieste.
