Giovanni Francesco Bezzi, also known as “Il Nosadella“,
ca. 1530 Bologna - 1571, attributed

SAINT JOSEPH

Oil on panel.
56 x 45 cm.
Unframed.

This certainly is a fragment of a painting that originally depicted The Holy Family. At the lower margin of the painting, next to Saint Joseph, the right hand and curls of a female figure as well as the small hand of the Christ Child holding a rose are still visible. These details recall the Madonna della rosa by Parmigianino (today held at the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden). However, by adding the figure of a pensive Joseph, our painter has modified the subject to the The Holy Family. It is especially this vigorously masculine figure, which gives the painting a Michelangelesque character and masks the actual resemblances with Parmigianino. These features recall works by Pellegrino Tibaldi, although physiognomy, posture and expression are more exaggerated. In turn, this brings the painting more in line with works by Giovanni Francesco Bezzi (also known as “Il Nosadella“), an inventive and also eccentric follower of Tibaldi. There are many comparable depictions of male bearded heads that support this attribution stylistically. Reference should be made to the Madonna e santi in the oratory of the Santa Maria della Vita church in Bologna, Presentazione di Gesù al tempio (Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin/ Ohio) and both versions of the Circoncisione (Santa Maria Maggiore, Bologna, and Private Collection).
