Nach einer medizinischen Ausbildung wandte sich Edoarda (gen. Dada) der Kunst zu und freundete sich mit Piero Manzoni an, mit dem sie ab 1957 eine lebenslange Freundschaft verband. Ihr erster, bedeutender Werkkomplex sind die sogenannten „Volume“, die sie 1958 auf ihrer ersten Einzelausstellung in der Galerie Bossi in Mailand zeigte. Diesem Komplex gehört auch das vorliegende Werk an. 1959, dem Jahr, in dem die Arbeit entstand, trat Dada der Gruppe Azimuth bei, die Piero Manzoni, Agostino Bonalumi und Castellani gegründet hatten. Diese Gruppe unterhielt Kontakte zur Zero Gruppe in Deutschland, der Group Nul in den Niederlanden und der Gruppe Motus in Frankreich. (1022411)

After her medical training Edoarda (nicknamed “Dada”) devoted herself to art and in 1957 became friends with Piero Manzoni with whom she shared a life-long friendship. Her first group of works is the so-called “Volume” which she first exhibited in 1958 in a solo exhibition at Bossi Gallery in Milan. The present painting is part of this group of works. The painting was created in 1959, the same year Dada joined Azimuth, a group founded by the artists Piero Manzoni, Agostino Bonalumi and Castellani. This group had contact with the artist group Zero in Germany, Nul in the Netherlands and Motus in France.
