Insgesamt in schönem Zustand. (10204813) (12)

Isaac L. Israels,
1865 Amsterdam - 1934 The Hague

SELF-PORTRAIT WITH HAT

Oil on canvas.
26 x 19.5 cm.
Signed lower left.

The artist's involvement in Impressionism is evident in the finely nuanced, almost monochrome colour palette and confident and, at times broad brush stroke. Israels first attended the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague before enrolling at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts Amsterdam in 1868 for one year. The artist often spent his summers with his father in Scheveningen on the Dutch coast, where he worked with the German Impressionist artist Max Liebermann who was at the time around 20 years his senior. The influence of Liebermann's work is evident here in the present work. In good overall condition.
