Der Künstler genoss seine Ausbildung an der Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie unter Eugen Dücker. Zahlreiche Reisen führten ihn nach Italien, Spanien, Frankreich und die Niederlande, wo er vor allem in Amsterdam tätig war.
Das vorliegende Gemälde zeigt eine der Amsterdamansichten. Entlang einer bereits im Schatten liegenden Gracht zieht sich der Amsterdamer Blumenmarkt, dessen Blütenpracht der Künstler in sattem Kolorit schildert und dadurch einen reizvollen Kontrast zu der verschatteten Straße erzeugt.
