Jahrhunderts so beliebten Sujets wieder.
MYSTICAL MARRIAGE OF SAINT CATHERINE

Oil on panel.
38 x 46 cm.
Framed.

Accompanied by an expert's report by Maria Agnese Chiari Moretto Wiel, Venice.

The present work is consistent with the traditional manner of representation of this subject, which was so popular in Venetian painting of the 15th and 16th century. According to legend Saint Catherine of Alexandria had a mystical vision of her marriage with baby Jesus in which he put a ring on her finger. The influence of Giovanni Bellini is distinctly noticeable, however this painting is set in an archaic context, which fits well with the style of Francesco di Simone da Santacroce. He was the founder of a workshop in the Veneto that stayed active over a century and produced great artists such as Andrea Previtali and Palma il Vecchio until the early 16th century. The present work may have been created in the first decade of the 16th century, a period with known and documented works by Francesco da Santacroce, such as „The Annunciation“ from 1504 (Accademia Carrara, Bergamo) and „Virgin with Child and Saints“ in the Church of San Pietro Martire in Murano (1507). Restored.
