recorded in Genoa 1385 – 1417, attributed

THE VIRGIN AND CHILD

Tempera and gilt-ground on panel.
32 x 21 cm.

Niccolò da Voltri was one of the leading Ligurian artists towards the end of the 14th and early 15th centuries. He was probably a student of Barnaba da Modena, whose influence can however only be felt in his early work. Instead Niccolò da Voltri was guided by the style of the Tuscan artists working in Liguria, namely Taddeo di Bartolo (in Genoa 1393 – 1395) and Turino Vanni. At the beginning of the 15th century his paintings, such as the “Polittico dell’Annunciazione” (today held at the Pinacoteca Vaticana) show a decorative elegance, great attention in the application of the gilding and a sophisticated linearity suggestive of the Gothic style. The present, beautiful depiction of the Madonna also shows Late Gothic influences, general iconographic features (frequently recurring in Ligurian art) such as the Christ Child stretching the sole of his foot out towards the beholder and a small bird that he is holding in this right hand. The painting resembles other works by the artist, for example the “The Virgin and Child” in the San Rocco Church in Genoa which was probably created ca. 1390 and its later version, which the artist painted for the San Donato Church in Genoa.
