Johann Alexander Thiele’s art works are associated with city views of Dresden, although the artist was also active in other parts of Germany. In 1715, Thiele arrived in Dresden where he developed his own style which he later refined in the workshop of Adam Manyoki. He started working for the Saxon minister Jakob Heinrich von Flemming, who became an important patron and collector of his art. Thiele’s paintings are among the best vedutas of Saxony and especially the light vistas of Dresden and the forest landscapes of the Elbe valley were well received. The present paintings were created as counterparts and show a forest landscape with a river, edifices and finely executed staffage figures.
