Felice Brusasorci,
1540 Verona - 1605, attributed

THE VIRGIN AND CHILD WITH YOUNG SAINT JOHN

Oil on slate.
29 x 22.5 cm.

It was Felice Brusasorci who introduced slate painting to Verona in the last decades of the 15th century. Very soon it became one of the most popular of this School. The slate paintings by Felice Brusasorci all have exactly the same characteristics as the present work, which was intended for private purposes. While the composition is simple, the figures are however very sculptural, so that the black background is shown to advantage; too harsh colour contrasts are deliberately avoided, creating a very special subtlety due to the rather narrow colour spectrum. The painting at hand is definitely comparable with other works by Brusasorci, such as the “Deposizione di Cristo con la Maddalena” (Museo Castelvecchio, Verona), the “Martirio di Sant'Agnese” or “Cleo-patra” at the Musei Civici, Padua.
