Der Weimarer Maler wurde von Goethe, für den er schon als Siebzehnjähriger Wolkenstudien ausführte, gefördert. Nach Heinrich Meyers Tod 1832 übernahm er die Leitung der Zeichenakademie in Weimar. Als einziger Künstler erhielt Preller die Erlaubnis, Goethe auf dem Totenbett zu zeichnen. Atmosphärisch-romantische Darstellung eines Felshangs mit knorrig-verwildertem Baumbewuchs.
Werke des Künstlers befinden sich in vielen deutschen und europäischen Museen. (1011062) (14)
