Der Italienische Künstler und Gelehrte Giuseppe Bossi (1777 - 1815) widmete sein Leben vor allem dem Studium Leonardo da Vincis und Dantes und war u. a. an der Ausgabe von Vasaris Vitae beteiligt.
Prof. Mazzocca ordnet diesen wichtigen Gipsabguss der Kolossalbüste Bossis, deren Marmorversion sich in der Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Mailand befindet, der römischen Werkstatt Canovas zu. Somit entstand sie unter der direkten Aufsicht des bedeutenden klassizistischen Künstlers. Die Büste Bossis wurde anlässlich des Besuchs dieser illustren Persönlichkeit des Klassizismus in Rom von Canova im Jahre 1810 gefertigt. Die Ausführung in Marmor war 1816 fertiggestellt und wurde 1817 im Palazzo Brera ausgestellt. Durch einen Stich Bernardino Consortis fand das Werk weite Verbreitung. Minimal besch. (10113011) (12)

Plaster cast, painted in gesso-colour. Inscribed “ICONEN/ JOSEPHI BOSSI PICTORIS/ LITERIS OPTIMAE INSTRUCTI ANTONIUS CANOVA/ LACROMANS FECET ET EXORNANDO MONUM/ AMICI. B. M. DONO. D./ AN. MDCCCXVI” on the reverse.

The Italian artist and scholar Giuseppe Bossi (1777 - 1815) dedicated his life above all to studying Leonardo da Vinci and Dante and was among others involved in the publishing of Vasari’s Vitae. With minimal damage.
