THE FINDING OF MOSES

Oil on canvas.
65 x 95 cm.

The outstanding painter and stage designer Giovanni Battista Crosato was active in the region between Venice and Turin. He painted the Old Testament scene of the Finding of Moses (Exodus 2.1 - 10) at least three times prior to this. The present painting was formerly attributed to Gaspare Diziani and has only recently been identified as one of Crosato's works (Craievich, 2005), as it shows close references with a painting, which is today held at the Museo Civico di Palazzo Madama in Turin. According to the opinion of Denis Ton, the author of Crosato's catalogue raisonné, the present painting should be attributed to the artist's mature work and can possibly be dated in the first half of the 1750s.
