A. Bettagno (Hrsg.), Francesco Guardi. Vedute Capricci Feste, Ausstellungskatalog, Venedig, 1993, Nr. 25, 31, S. 96, 108). (991421) (12)

VIEW OF SAN GIORGIO MAGGIORE AND THE GIUDECCA SEEN FROM THE PIAZZETTA (VEDUTA DI SAN GIORGIO MAGGIORE E DELLA GIUDECCA DALLA PIAZZETTA)

Oil on canvas.
57 x 80 cm.

Accompanied by a copy of the expert’s report by Antonio Morassi.

The church San Giorgio Maggiore, built by Palladio, and Guidecca Island are two of Francesco Guardi’s favourite subjects, which he repeatedly painted during his career. As in the present painting, the artist preferably chose the view from the ‘Piazzetta’, the small square between the Doge’s Palace and the Libreria Sansoviniana. Stylistically, this painting can clearly be placed in Francesco Guardi’s early creative years between 1750 and1760 when he set out on his career as Venetian Veduta painter and was still clearly influenced by Canaletto. The clarity of the painting’s execution, the precise brushwork the vibrant colours and the subject of this painting are in line with Guardi’s oeuvre of those years.
