In dem hier vorliegenden Gemälde beschäftigt sich Alessandro Magnasco, einer der wichtigsten Künstler Genuas zwischen Ende des 17. und der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts, mit einem für ihn wichtigen Thema. Magnasco interessierte sich für das religiöse Leben, kollektive Rituale, den religiösen Kult. Ihn faszinierten öffentliche Versammlungen, Prozessionen und Wallfahrten, die er häufig mit scharfsinnigem und direktem Realismus darstellte.
Unser Bild zeigt neben dem tragbaren Tabernakel mit der Statue der Heiligen Jungfrau einen herumziehenden Bänkelsänger, der begleitet von seiner Laute einer kleinen Gruppe von knienden Gläubigen die Geschichte Marias zu erzählen scheint. Das Werk gliedert sich stilistisch wie ikonografisch in das Gesamtwerk Magnascos ein. Hierzu sei auf folgende Werke gleichen Inhalts hingewiesen. Eines in einer Privatsammlung (s. Franchini Guelfi 1991, n. 28; S. 68-69) sowie in der Galleria di Palazzo Bianco, Genua (s. Alessandro Magnasco 1996, S. 28, Fig. 19). Des Weiteren auf „Soldati, pitocchi e cantastorie“ (Soldaten, Geizhälse und Bänkelsänger) in der Staatsgalerie Stuttgart (s. ebenda, S. 2238, Fig. 264) und Cantastorie (Bänkelsänger), Privatsammlung (s. Franchini Guelfi 1977, S. 326, XXXII).

In the present painting Alessandro Magnasco, one of the most important Genovese artists between the end of the 17th and the first half of the 18th century, engages in a subject matter that was always important to him: religious life, collective rituals and the religious cult. The work corresponds with Magnasco's oeuvre, stylistically as well as iconographical.
