Das vorliegende Gemälde gehört zu einer Serie von kleinformatigen, nicht religiösen sondern geschichtlichen, allegorischen oder mythologischen Darstellungen, die Bonifacio de'Pitati zu Beginn der ersten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts malte. Zu dieser Gruppe gehören die beiden Allegorien in der Gemäldegalerie Berlin, „Antiochos und Stratonike“ in dem Museo Poldi Pezzoli in Mailand und weitere Gemälde - dem vorliegend formal ähnlich - welche Helden und Heldinnen der Antike darstellen, meist in Anlehnung an Ovid, Virgil, Plutarch und Titus Livius, wie zum Beispiel Coriolan, Cloelia, Aeneas etc. Die hier dargestellte heroische Schlachtenszene entlang eines Flusslaufs stellt Horatius Cocles dar, wie er allein den etruskischen, von Porsenna geführten Truppen den Weg nach Rom bei der Pons Sublicius verwehrt. Im Hintergrund erkennt man die mächtige Engelsburg.
